The Church’s Mission

Mission  Nugget:  Karen  Refugee Ministry

American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) has been working vigorously with thousands of refugees from Burma since an influx began in 2006. Today, approximately 80,000 Karen, Chin, Kachin, Karenni, Mon, Shan, Lisu and other ethnic groups are resettled in more than 130 U.S. cities and 40 states. The ethnic communities are found in 30 regions of American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), and at least 40 percent of the refugees have a historical link with ABCUSA from Adoniram Judson’s mission to Burma in 1813. Rev. Florence Li, National Ministries’ Asian church strategist, who is heavily involved with the Burmese refugee Task Force, said that the incoming of the refugees into our churches has truly transformed our denominational lives. She said, “In learning to embrace and accept the Karen and Chin refugees, we have experienced the grace of God and the reliving of the Judson legacy.”

Board of Missions Backpack Spotlight Items:
