First Baptist Church    ~    June 2014

From the Pastor

Dear Christian Family,

As I write this we need to be in prayer for those affected by weather and flooding here. We also need to put feet to our prayers and help wherever we can. It can take some time to get things back to normal.

We haven’t left yet for Karen’s mom’s birthday, but, we are looking forward to it. (Heat and humidity not withstanding!)

Time seems to be flying by and June will soon be upon us. That brings some special events upon us.

On Monday, June 2nd we will begin showing movies after the fellowship dinner. On the 9th, for those who don’t go to the association meeting on the 8th, we’ll have missionaries Pete and Sarah McCurdy after the dinner. (No, not for dinner) And the next week we’ll be back to movies.

Other highlights are Family/Father’s Day Picnic, and preparing for the big sale in July. Start saving up your valuable donations for this fundraiser to eliminate our budget deficit.

Blessings, Pastor Steve

Missionary News

  • Roberta Stephens - Roberta’s latest Journal “Memory Trip” conclusion is in. She tells or her 25 day trip to North Eastern Japan. She tells of People, Places, and Experiences. A good read.
  • Tim & Patti Long - Tim and Pattie are soliciting support for their programs in Baja California. Look for their brochures.
  • Kathy & Wayne Niles - Second Milo was nice enough to share the latest journal from Wayne & Kathy Niles in Congo. Kathy tells of the beginning of construction of a new Nursing Arts building in Vanga. The project was a dream of Kathy’s mom, Miriam Fountain. Dan and Miriam Fountain are well known missionaries to many of you.

Read all the Journals mentioned above. They are found on the Reader’s Table or Bulletin Board in the foyer to the Great Room.

One Great Hour of Sharing Letter to the Congregation

One Great Hour of Sharing offering – Sunday, June 22

During the month of June, we will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering. The offering will be received on June 22nd.  You gave $724 in 2013. Our goal for 2014 is $700. With of the terrible weather and disasters so far this year, the need for emergency funds is greater than ever. Here is a report:

Dear Friends, - “The glory that you have given me I have given to them, so that they may be one, as WE ARE ONE, I am in them and you in me, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:22-23)

With his beloved disciples, Jesus prayed for connection and unity. Perhaps he knew that understanding our oneness would be one of our greatest challenges as human beings, and that is why one of his very last acts was to pray for unity.

For 7 decades now, nine denominations in the U.S., united as one, have been connecting people though the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. Men and women living in poverty who might have been overlooked, or outrightly forgotten, have been assisted by our gifts to the OGHS offering. The woman who was a victim of war, attempting to raise a family on her own, has been helped by funds from the OGHS. Families across our country, struggling to overcome devastation from the deadly storms ravaging our country, are helped by funds from OGHS.

Each time a gift is given, a connection is made. Each donation to the OGHS offering, no matter how large or small, reveals our unity, that in Christ Jesus we are one family.

We are the hungry, the thirsty, the homeless, the hurting. We are the one with the need. We will answer Christ’s call until all are fed.  UNTIL  ALL  ARE  FED.

Please give generously to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering.

A Prayer for Our Nation on Flag Day, June 14

Almighty God, we pray that you will bless our country, that it may be a blessing to the world. Help us to adopt aims and policies that are in accordance with your will. May we see ourselves as others see us, and avoid self-deception and hypocrisy. Lead us to sound government, equal justice under law, wise education, and incorruptible media of news. Grant us a true sense of fairness in our dealings with one another, and a spirit of service that will banish pride of place and give equality of opportunity. May we respect our country and our flag and worthily represent what they stand for in the way we live.
