The year has gotten off to a great start. The financial news was good and the budget news was good. The Mission news was good and attendance has been good. We are encouraged in so many ways! I am very excited that we will be getting new hymnals soon. Your commitment and your generosity in this project have been great. We already have a number of pledges. While the flexibility in finding music in various places has been good, the work in trying to format it to fit into bulletin inserts will not be missed. I have to commend and thank our church secretary, Peggy, for the finagling (a technical term) she has had to do to get everything in. I’m sure the fact that we won’t have to run as many copies is a good thing, too. I look forward to all the things we can accomplish in the Lord this year! God bless us, everyone! - Pastor Steve

Lord, our heavenly Father, the high and mighty Ruler of the universe, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers upon earth; Most heartily we beseech thee, with thy favour to behold and bless thy servant THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, and all others in authority; and so replenish them with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that they may always incline to thy will, and walk in thy way. Endue them plenteously with heavenly gifts; grant them in health and prosperity long to live; and finally, after this life, to attain everlasting joy and felicity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
This prayer is from the Book of Common Prayer adopted by the Episcopal Church in the United States of America in October 1789. It has been in continuous use since that date. It is modeled after A Prayer for the King’s Majesty in the 1662 and 1559 editions of the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.
It is said to have been adapted from prayers for the ruling authorities in the 6th century Sacramentary of St. Gregory, and can be traced back to the admonition, “…that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty…” (I Tim. 2:1-2).
In 1800 the entire federal government was relocated from Philadelphia to Washington. John Adams, the country’s second president (1797-1810), moved into the still unfinished presidential mansion on November 1st and the next night wrote in a letter to his wife, Abigail Adams:
“I Pray Heaven Bestow the Best of Blessings on This House and All that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under this Roof”.
