The Church’s Mission

Mission  Nugget:  Karen  Refugee Ministry

Nearly 200 years ago, Ann and Adoniram Judson – the first American missionaries - landed as Baptists in the country of Burma, which is now known as Myanmar. The Judsons and other early missionaries introduced Jesus Christ to the Burmese, Chin, Karen and many other ethnic groups of Burma. Today, under a strict military dictatorship, hundreds of thousands of Karen, Chin and others are living as refugees in Thailand, Malaysia and other neighboring countries. For a number of years, the United States has been accepting Karen and Chin refugees for permanent resettlement and eventual U.S. citizenship. Stripped of the material comforts we often take for granted, but with a faith and spiritual foundation that keeps them strong, they have been seeking out our churches in many cities across the country, strengthening us with their faith and energy. Tens of thousands of additional Karen, Chin and perhaps others from Burma are expected to come to live permanently in the United States over the next few years. For nearly 200 years, the people of Burma accepted our missionaries and message. Now it is our turn to welcome and accept them and to see where God leads us together.
